North Eastern Regional Coordinator Mohamed Birik has asked parents to report their sons and daughters who have disappeared from home to the police.
Birik says the move will help detectives trace missing youths who might have crossed to Somalia and joined terror groups.
Speaking to journalists in Garissa Town on Thursday, the commissioner revealed that some missing youths from the region could have crossed to Somalia to join Al-Shabaab.
He said that the youth could be receiving training from the militants.
“We are appealing to parents and guardians whose sons and daughters disappeared from home to urgently report to the police,” he said.
Birik stated that parents who fail to report such cases will be treated the same way as terror suspects.
He said security forces has enhanced surveillance across North Eastern region.
The commissioner pleaded with residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious people to the police.
North Eastern region and especially Garissa has in the recent years been hit with deadly terror attacks orchestrated by Al-Shabaab militants.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility of last month’s terror attack at the DusitD2 hotel complex in Nairobi.
The attack left 21 people dead and others injured.
