Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju has warned politicians against being too obsessed with political seats and positions in the proposed constitutional amendments.

Already, a debate is heating on whether the Executive should be expanded through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), or if the existing seats should be strengthened.

However, the ex-Rarieda Member of Parliament is of the opinion that the changes should be about bringing what is good for Kenyans and not about political seats as is the case now.

He says that it should not be about the president and Prime Minister seats but about giving Kenyans a good set of laws.

"It is a pity that some people talk about a powerful presidency or powerful prime minister. What we need is a good constitution," he said in an interview on K24 on Sunday.

He also stated that the implementation model of the BBI report should be determined by the contents of the report and not what politicians want to be done.

According to him, the proposed referendum should only be held if the BBI report suggestions reach that constitutional threshold and not due to the demand by some politicians.

"We should have a referendum if the changes BBI wants us to go through reach that constitutional threshold. It is not up to us," he added.

However, both President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga who founded the push have thrown their weight behind a referendum implementation.

They have both rejected calls to have the document approved by the parliament, saying that Kenyans should be allowed to have the final say.
