The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC )has verified at least one million signatures collected by Thirdway Alliance Kenya party in its bid to amend the Constitution.
In a statement on Thursday, IEBC confirmed that the signatures the party presented for verification are genuine, and gave the political outfit a go-ahead as it seeks to make changes to the constitution.
The commission revealed that a total of 1,222,541 signatures were confirmed to be of registered voters from different parts of the country.
Following the new development, the proposal will now be taken to all the 47 county assemblies for purposes of deliberation, before they can be taken for further discussions in Parliament.
“Thereafter, the Speakers of the respective County Assemblies will submit the decisions of their respective County Assemblies to the Speakers of the National Assembly and the Senate pursuant to Article 257(6) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010,” read part of the statement from the commission.
Third Way Alliance is seeking a number of constitutional changes including reduction of Members of Parliament.
