Ambassador Amina Mohammed is now the new Cabinet Secretary (CS) in charge of Sports after President Uhuru Kenyatta sacked Rashid Echesa on Friday morning.
Moving into the new ministry, Ambassador Mohammed has her work clearly cut out.
Here are some of tasks awaiting her in the new docket:
1. Deliver government’s pledge to Harambee Stars.
In September last year, Deputy President William Ruto promised that the government will give the Kenya National Soccer Team, Harambee Stars Sh50 million as a token of appreciation if the team qualifies for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Well, as you already know, Stars qualified for the 2019 AFCON but the DP’s pledge has not yet been delivered. Every soccer fan in the country will be looking upon the new CS to ensure the promise is fulfilled.
2. Sort out Sebastian Migne’s salary issues
Harambee Stars head coach Frenchman Sebastian Migne has on various occasions threatened to quit if his salary issue is not sorted out once and for all.
The coach has reportedly gone without salary for months, with the Ministry of Sports and the Kenya Football Federation (FKF) officials trading blame games, and giving out false promises.
Amina Mohammed has to collaborate with various stakeholders to sort out this issue, as Harambee Stars prepares for the 2019 of AFCON in Egypt between June and July.
Together with FKF officials, she should ensure that Harambee Stars gets the best preparations ever, given the fact that the team will be participating in AFCON for the first time since 2004.
3. Preparations for the 2020 youth athletics championships/2020 Olympics
Kenya will host the 2020 IAAF World U20 Championships. Still, Tokyo Japan will host the 2020 summer Olympics.
These two events need the best ever preparations to ensure that Kenyan athletes shine.
Welcome to the Sports docket Ambassador Amina Mohammed. You have your work cut out.
