Angry residents of Openda village in Makara area, South Mugirango in Kisii County attacked a 66-year-old man on Wednesday accusing him of practicing witchcraft.
Confirming the incident area assistant chief, Isaac Osoe said angry locals stormed John Masaku's home, kicked him out of the house before they started beating him.
"Locals stormed Masaku's home at 2 pm armed with crude weapons and found him in the house sleeping. The angry locals frog-marched him outside, stripped him naked before they started beating him," he said.
The administrator said Nyumba Kumi officials rushed to the homestead and rescued the elderly man.
"Masaku could have been lynched were it not for the Nyumba Kumi officials who rescued him. He is being accused of practicing witchcraft and owning over 3 hyenas he is using to conduct his witchcraft at night," said the chief.
He warned locals against taking the law into their hands and urged them to surrender crime suspects to police.
Christopher Mogaka, a local said Masaku should surrender his witchcraft to priests failure to which he will not be allowed to live in the village.
"We will only allow him to live in the village if he surrenders his witchcraft to priests. He pretends to be a Catholic follower but, in reality, he is a witch," said Mogaka.
