Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s move to endorse Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s 2022 presidential bid is likely to create a political storm ahead of the much anticipated 2022 polls, political analyst Peter Ngure has said.
Ngure says Sonko, a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto could find himself in trouble over the alleged endorsement.
The analyst observes that Sonko is among top allies DP Ruto is counting on to popularize his 2022 presidential bid.
Speaking in an exclusive interview by this writer on Sunday, Ngure said Kalonzo's endorsement by the governor could complicate DP Ruto’s popularity in Nairobi politics.
“It is a fact that Sonko is DP Ruto’s ally and the latter played a big role in the former's election as Nairobi governor,” said Ngure.
Ngure says Ruto could be in trouble should Sonko abandon him for Kalonzo ahead of the 2022 polls.
He said the Nairobi governor is a political ‘hotcake’ owing to the numbers he controls in the city.
Sonko has been in the past months alleging a plot by some Mt Kenya politicians to shortchange DP Ruto as the Jubilee candidate in 2022.
In April, Sonko claimed that some politicians from Mt. Kenya were meeting in top city hotels to shortchange the DP ahead of 2022.
Ruto is depending on Mt. Kenya's support in his push to succeed President Kenyatta in 2022.
A section of Mt. Kenya politicians has, however, been quoted saying the region might not automatically support the DP in the next elections.
