Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Saturday led police officers, local chiefs, and Nyumba Kumi officials in an operation aimed at disarming locals in possession of firearms without approval.
During the operation that swept the better part of Gusii land-Kisii and Nyamira, Matiang’i warned locals against acquiring firearms illegally to use them in robbing innocent people.
“Our people should not be allowed to own firearms illegally which they will end up using to rob people. I will not sit and watch crime in my own home turf. The Interior Ministry is not going to condone local youths from Gusii region to own firearms,” he noted.
A total of 15 cattle rustlers were also nabbed during the operation and will be arraigned in court on Monday.
According to the CS, cattle theft has brought him shame since he is working for the government.
“I am serving at a crucial docket but, it is shameful that some few individuals have decided to team up to continue stealing cattle in the region. I will not allow anyone even if it is my brother to taint my name. Criminals must be arrested and be taken to court,” he noted.
He pleaded with police officers and local chiefs to maintain a good working relationship with members of the public who will help in identifying criminals.
Matiang’i said whoever is in possession of a gun in his or her house should surrender it to police before the law catches up with them.
He said the operation will go on until zero cases of crime are reported in the entire Gusii region.
