Several passengers are currently stranded at the Kisumu International Airport (KIA) after members of the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) went on strike this morning.
One of the passengers through her Twitter handle aired her frustrations saying that there are no signs of flights at KIA, adding that she had missed a very important event, and that relevant authorities should take action against the workers.
"Am at Kisumu airport no sign of flights, this is not right even after court injunction they still went on strike, disciplinary action must be taken', posted Zamzam Mohammed.
"They really messed us, still stranded at Kisumu airport, missing a very important event on human trafficking and the rights of diaspora workers from Kenya. So sad,"she added.
Following the complaints, Kenya Airways has released a statement apologizing for the inconveniences caused by what they termed as an 'illegal strike', adding that delays should be expected.
"Kenya Airways regrettably wishes to inform its customers and the general public that due to the illegal strike by Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU), the airline will be experiencing disruptions in normal flight operations.", reads part of the statement.
"We regret this situation and we are making every effort to minimize the inconveniences this strike action may cause to our guests. The relevant stakeholders are already doing everything possible to restore operations at the airport. We invite all guests to check on the Kenya Airways official social media platforms for regular updates on their flights. The airline also offers guests who are booked on KQ-operated flights today 6th March 2019 who would like to rebook or reroute their flights that this will be done at no cost," adds the statement.
