Speaking on Milele FM early Wednesday, the county chief called for changes to bar deputy governors from automatically assuming the gubernatorial seat in case the county boss is rendered incapable.

He raised concerns on the speed with which the deputies move to have themselves sworn in as Governors at such time, proposing that each county be subjected to a gubernatorial by-election when such occurs.

''Mambo ya Naibu Gavana kukimbilia kuapishwa si nzuri na italeta shida nchini (we need to put a stop to the current situation where deputies rush for the seat immediately it falls vacant),'' he said.

''Tukiendelea hivi huenda viti hivi vikaanza kubaki vitupu kwa njia zisizoeleweka ili wengine wayakalie. Inafaa tubadilishe katiba ili tuwe na kura ya marudio haya yanapotokea (this way we will soon start witnessing the seats suspiciously falling vacant as some deputies plot how to occupy them. We need to have by-elections to fill the empty seats),'' he added.

Sonko, however, pointed out that he is not directly referring to any Deputy Governor, noting that he is as well not directing the remarks at Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga who took over after Governor Wahome Gakuru's death in November last year.
