Kenyans to receive salaries in new bank notes, CBK Governor says
Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor Patrick Njoroge on Tuesday announced that Kenyans will from July start getting their salary in the new generation notes.
Njoroge who appeared before the Public Investments Committee (PIC) said those who will be withdrawing their money from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) will get their pay in the new notes.
Dr Njoroge said bank ATMs across the country have been reconfigured to dispense the new bank notes.
He said that Kenyans will start withdrawing new generation currency this week adding that ATMs in highly populated areas and far-flung areas will be fed with the new notes.
“People will largely get their salaries in new bank notes this month. We are starting to feed the ATMs with new currency banknotes as we wean them of old generational currency.”
“We are starting with ATMs in far-flung areas because they are often forgotten. Those in cities like Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu will also access the new-look banknotes,” he said.
CBK had on June 1 during the Madaraka Day celebrations, announced that it was withdrawing the Sh1,000 notes in a bid to counter counterfeits and money laundering and directed Kenyans to exchange them for the new currency before October 1.
