A building hosting several Kisumu county offices was on Monday left darkness after the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) cut power supply.
Operations at the Prosperity Building have been stalled after the cutout before the company temporarily reconnected power in some offices on Tuesday.
The action reportedly follows the Governor Anyang' Nyong'o-led government's inability to pay a sum of Ksh 1.24 million owed to Kenya Power.
Other affected departments include Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) offices, Immigration Department offices and Huduma Center which has had its power reconnected.
According to Dan Obiero, the Kenya Power Western Region Manager, Huduma Center and LVBC have paid their bills, he said on Tuesday.
“The tenants at the building (Prosperity House) have a single metre save for the East African Community’s LVBC and Huduma centre.
The other tenants have their own arrangements of paying their electricity bills and to date, they owe us Sh1.4 million,” he was quoted by the Nation.
He added that the power company has as well disconnected power to streetlights over another Ksh16.8 million debt owed by the county.
Responding to the same the Governor's office, however, acknowledged the power loss but faulted claims that it was disconnected due to a debt owed.
"As we speak (10:05 am) we don’t have power, not because it has been disconnected, but because of a blackout.
We usually make our payments on time and I want to make it clear that we have no arrears owed to Kenya power,” said Aloyce Ager, the Governor's Press Secretary.
