Soon after the famous Raila-Uhuru ‘handshake’, Kenyan politics have taken u-turn as it sparked mixed reactions both within the public and different political circles ahead of 2022 presidential race.
One of the obvious candidates in the race will be deputy president William Ruto as he is looking forward to take over from president Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, his political allies feel that the entry of Raila Odinga into the Jubilee government through the handshake might hinder William Ruto’s political ambitions and the support they expect from the Mt Kenya region.
Despite Ruto’s rising star, 2022 elections may spring a surprise to many Kenyans who see the deputy president as the most popular candidate and the DP may lose the top seat since politics is a game that cannot be easily predicted.
In the event of this scenario, William Ruto will have to decide on his next move and he will be forced to make a choice from these three options ;
Opposition Leader.
Ruto is a front runner for 2022, a position reinforced by the cracks being experienced in the current NASA coalition. If he loses his presidential bid, chances are high that he will be the first runners up and he automatically be the opposition based on the following he commands and the weight that comes with his statements.
Support the winning party.
Just like Raila Odinga who lost in 2017,Ruto may opt to support and work with the new government for the betterment of the country.
Retire from politics.
William Ruto has been in politics for over twenty years and will have served as the deputy president for two terms. For this reasons, the Dp may choose to resign from politics and concentrate on other issues.
