It began three weeks when the body of a missing villager was found buried in a gunny bag, the blame landing on Gikware Mukengu, brother to area chief Japheth Mayau.

On Tuesday, irate villagers stormed Mukengu's home but missed him, killing the chief instead, Chuka OCS Joseph Kinyua was also killed in Embu on Wednesday evening.

The police boss was pursuing one of the chief's lynching suspects, but met his death after the suspect raised an alarm as the police approached his butchery, attracting a mob.

“This forced the officers to shoot in the air severally to disperse the mob,” police reports indicate.

It has emerged that on approaching the suspect's butchery, David Ikaaba (the suspect) charged at the OCS and axed him on the head, the officer also shot Ikaaba on the chest.

The OCS was accompanied by 12 officers during the operation.

"The said officer was rushed to Tenri Hospital in Embu where he succumbed to the injuries on arrival,” police records report, as was seen the Standard.

It has also emerged that the late Mayau and Mukengu were also responsible for harassing residents, and had diverted River Thuci to their land, angering residents.

This was in addition to claims that Mukengu also detained goats belonging to Gitonga after they allegedly trespassed into his land.
