A section of motorists operating in Kisii County have told off Kisii County commissioner Godfrey Kigochi following his warning to PSV operators on overcharging passengers.
The motorists claimed that police will not decide on the fares they will charge clients.
"Kigochi and the lazy officers should keep off matatu business. We will continue overcharging passengers because we are doing so to meet the daily target due to the tough Michuki rules," said Evans Obuto, a driver plying Kisii-Oyugis route.
Kelvin Onsongo, a driver Kisii-Kilgoris route said police officers are afraid they will not be getting bribes like in the past.
"We never carry excess like in the past so that the lazy and rogue officers can solicit bribes. Complying with the tough rules means we need to charge high fares," said Onsongo.
He urged police to focus on inspecting PSVs and not being concerned about the fares passengers are being charged.
David Mogesa wondered why Kigochi will waste time issuing threats which won't work.
"Kigochi wasted time on Friday warning motorists against hiking fares. Let him focus on security and keep off the matatu business," said Mogesa.
On Friday last week, Kigochi threatened that police will arrest and prosecute PSV operators overcharging passengers.
