It was March 7, 2016 when Jubilee under President Uhuru Kenyatta and Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) under opposition chief Raila Odinga had convened separate meetings waiting for the outcome of the Malindi by-election.
Jubilee had dispatched a group of high profile MPs from Nairobi led by then Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu as Cord's brigade was led by Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho to lead their respective campaigns ahead of the poll.
There were widespread allegations from the Cord coalition that Waititu and colleagues had been sent to the Coastal constituency loaded with money to bribe voters to reject the ODM candidate - Willy Mtengo who was vying against Jubilee's Philip Charo.
When ODM and Cord reported the bribery allegations to the Malindi Police Station, police immediately swung into action and arrested Waititu and his friends. They recorded police statements and were allowed to leave.
But before their departure, Joho, alongside other Coast opposition MPs including Mvita's Abdulswamad Nassir arrived at the police station where they demanded to know from Waititu why they had wanted to tilt the vote outcome through bribery.
A verbal exchange between the two leaders ensued as police tried to separate them.
Joho had claimed that the Jubilee allied MPs were armed with guns and it was illegal for them to conduct campaigns armed. Joho said they (Cord team) feared for their lives.
"To who does Kenya belong to? Joho asked furiously while standing adjacent to Waititu who was being flanked by the police. Waititu don't dare me. Never try me Waititu. Don't try me. I am telling you don't try me."
At the moment there was a push and pull as police tried to separate the Jubilee and Cord teams.
As Joho angrily spit words bitterly, Waititu quickly responded: "Even me. Who do you think am I? You think I can fear you? Joho do you really think I can fear you?"
The by-election was eventually held and the opposition candidate won with 15,582 votes against Jubilee candidate's 9,243.
