Eldoret which is commonly known as 'The Home of Champions', is the second largest town in Rift Valley after Nakuru. There has been a talk of the town being elevated into the prestigious city status but it might be hard for it get that coveted title due to the following 3 reasons;

Strict rules from Municipality

Eldoret town has all that entails being a city. However, the law must take its way first. The law on urbanization does not allow easily a place to become a city.

“We had put in place all requirements but only the issue of municipality laws locked us out. We are working on the adoption of a municipality by formulating laws that govern municipality upon which Eldoret town will be elevated,” says Nelson Maritim, the Uasin Gishu County Executive in charge of the Lands and Physical Planning.

Inadequate houses

A city accommodates as many people as over one million. This large population require more rental houses in the town. Eldoret has inadequate investment in real estate. The best estate like Elgon View cannot accommodate more than 500 thousands of residents. This inadequate hinders it from being branded city title like Kisumu, Nairobi and Mombasa.

Lack of land for expansion

Eldoret town is situated in the Agricultural area. More land is taken by farmers who practice large-scale farming. This has reduced the land for town expansion. The city requires large land for all urban activities which Eldoret area can afford, but, the residents value large-scale farming which will be hard for them to give in some land for city expansion.
