Have you ever been conned in Nairobi?
Well, if not, be careful as this is a good city full of bad people. Everyone is doing everything to survive the increased cost of living.
This includes stealing from innocent and unsuspecting customers. There are many things, especially electronics, that rogue city hawkers sell.
Most of these rogue hawkers come from surrounding places around the city. Some of them come from slums like Kibera while others come from middle-class areas like Embakasi. It's just mixed up!
Here are items to pay attention when buying from hawkers in Nairobi:
1. Flash disks
Many people have been surprised to buy a flash disk from a hawker and when they reach home they realise it is a toy. Rogue hawkers are fond of tempering with flash disks to make them look good from the outside but with nothing inside.
2. Modems
Just like a flash disk, rogue hawkers sell toy modems too. They remove the motherboard leaving it with only the head which is of no use. From the outside, they look nice and new.
3. Smartphone
Some hawkers will show you a working smartphone but when paying for it, they exchange it with another one which doesn’t work. Alternatively, they claim the smartphone is out of charge and thus cannot be powered on so that you inspect it, the outside looks good. When you buy it, you will realise later that the inside contains nothing but molded mud.
4. TV sets
Some of the rogue hawkers operate in shops. It will be easier for you to take home a fake TV when you are not careful. You will purchase a different set, but when packaging, they give you a different one. Always be careful.
5. A laptop
Buying electronics in Nairobi is very tricky. You always need to buy from known shops. Buying a laptop from rogue shops will only make you lose your money on a fake thing.
