Pressure from from regional politicians, civil rights activists and the Gusii community precipitated Raila Odinga to organise an urgent meeting with Tanzania President John Magufuli, it has emerged.
On Tuesday, Raila will attend funeral to Monica Joseph, a sister to President Magufuli, before the scheduled meeting hours later.
"H.E. Raila Odinga has this morning travelled to Tanzania to attend the funeral of Monica Joseph Magufuli, sister to President John Magufuli. President Magufuli and the Odinga families are close friends.
"His Excellency has travelled to Mwanza accompanied by National Assembly Minority Whip Hon. Junet Mohammed. He is expected back in Nairobi on Wednesday," read a statement from Dennis Onyango, his spokesman.
But the mounting pressure on Don Bosco, his former campaigner now facing money laundering and fraud charges, has turned out to be an elephant in the room.
A former MP who spoke in confidence, said the two leaders will meet and try to solve the puzzle.
"He was troubled over the matter given that we have promised often. They will meet and try to tackle the matter," he said.
On Saturday, a troubled Raila conceded that he's concerned with Mr. Gichana's woes and promised to act.
He was responding to questions raised by Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati, he demanded to know the fate of Bosco.
"It is a challenge to me and I'll basically handle it. It's been long but hopefully the matter will be put to rest," he said.
Renowned Canadian based lawyer Miguna Miguna accused Raila of abandoning Bosco despite campaigning for him in 2007.
The outspoken lawyer broke ranks with the ODM leader after he was denied entry to Kenya following his decision to swear Raila as People's president.
"Mr. Don Bosco Gichana was @RailaOdinga's blossom friend leading up to the 2007 election. It was Don Bosco Gichana who bought @RailaOdinga the (in)famous Hammer.
"Yet @RailaOdinga has never publicly asked @MagufuliJP his "friend" to release Don Bosco Gichana. #FreeDonBoscoGichana," he tweeted.
Tanzanian prosecutors have failed to prove the crimes Mr. Gichana is facing for the last five years.
