The report was released by Government Chemist on Monday.

It said the sugar tested had 0.5910 per parts per million (ppm) mercury which is risky to the human health.

The issue of mercury in sugar was first raised by Interior CS Fred Matiang'i when millions of kilograms of the contraband sugar were nabbed in Ruiru and Nairobi.

Interestingly, the Kenya Bereuaof Standards (Kebs) had contradicted Matiang'i saying there was no mercury in sugar.

Former Industrialization CS Adan Mohammed also claimed his colleague's remarks were alarmist.

Leaders have demanded the destruction of the illicit sugar to safeguard Kenyans from unscrupulous businessmen who care little about Kenyans health.
