On 9th March 2018, the handshake between opposition leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta forever changed the course of politics in Kenya.
Up to date, many are still trying to figure out what exactly this handshake mean to the future of Kenyan politics.
It is now nearing a year since the handshake took place and indeed many things have changed.
The line-up to the 2022 general elections is also changing by the day. If the recent events are anything to go by, then one can easily predict the winning team to watch out for.
President Uhuru Kenyatta recently added Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i powers which elevated him to the position of a super-minister.
This saw many politicians running their mouths, especially those supporting Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid.
They feel that the president is intentionally alienating the DP so that he can shortchange him as far as succession politics is concerned.
So what is the possible line up? In my opinion, I think President Uhuru Kenyatta is gearing towards a prime minister post. This is evident when he recently supported the call to change the constitution.
He probably does not want to leave power at such a young age. If he becomes the prime minister, then he will choose Gideon Moi and Musalia Mudavadi to deputize him.
Politically speaking, President Uhuru Kenyatta owes the Moi Family and the only time to pay back is in 2022 and that is why he will bring Gideon Moi closer to power.
The presidency will go to Raila Odinga with Kalonzo Musyoka as his deputy. With this line-up, it will become an uphill task for anyone who will run on a different political vehicle.
Deputy President William Ruto will either have to join the winning team or stay out in the cold until further notice.
