The ongoing probe on corruption by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations(DCI) and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)  has continued to spark different opinions from the Rift Valley region as a large percentage of the parastatal heads implicated in the graft allegations are from the Kalenjin community.

A section of leaders led by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has come out to defend their tribesmen claiming that the recent turn of events against the parastatal heads are aimed at tainting the image of the Kalenjin community and to frustrate Deputy President William Ruto’s efforts to clinch the presidential seat in the coming general elections.

Another group of leaders led by Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny has maintained that the probe is fair and those affected should face the law.

The issue has continued to cause unnecessary division in the community.

Joe Sang, Newton Terer, Ken Tarus, Lily Koros are some of the former parastatal bosses facing court charges.

These people should face their charges independently and politicians from Rift Valley region should keep off the issue and let those mandated with investigating corruption allegations do their job without any interruption.

The above names were little known to the Kalenjin community except for their neighbours, families and friends until when they were brought to the public limelight by their deeds and media.

It is therefore baseless to say that the ongoing war on corruption is targeting the whole community because if the suspects are responsible for the loss of public resources or they actually pocketed the lost billions, then their families were the only beneficiaries.

It is very illogical for our leaders to defend corruption suspects simply because they come from their tribes yet they still call the government to curb corruption in the country.

Those facing corruption charges should be investigated, charged and face the full force of the law if found responsible irrespective of their tribes.
