1. Dowry

Somalis are every particular with dowry.

They don’t allow their daughters to be taken away without downy being paid for them.

In Somali culture dowry is paid in form of camels.

In the community, the recommended number of camels one can pay as dowry is 50 for any bride.

However, the number can go up to 100 depending on certain peculiar circumstances.

A man who takes a Somali woman without the blessings of the elders and community is ridiculed and never respected.

2. Religious

For any man to marry a Somali woman, he has to be religious and must in many cases be a Muslim.

In Somali community, they take religion seriously.

In many cases, Somali women get married to men from their religion (Muslims).

In case a man is from another religion for example Christianity he is advised to convert to the woman’s religion.

3. Traditional marriage rites

It is a must for a traditional marriage rites to be done for a bride and groom in Somali community.

During this traditional rites, several rituals are conducted to bless the bride and groom.

No man takes a Somali woman without undergoing such rituals which elders say are important.

Such rites include ‘Gelbis’.

Gelbis is a Somali traditional marriage celebration where the bride and the groom are taken to the streets on a horse or camel with people singing and dancing behind them.

It is a mandatory celebration that happens at night when the wedding and before the groom bride depart to their new home.

It is also characterized with eating and dancing.
