At least eight police officers have been killed, two seriously injured as three others go missing after their land cruiser vehicle overrun a landmine in Konton area, Wajir County.
The incident happened on Friday night. Top police officials at the Nairobi headquarters are yet to issue any official communication despite the fact that they are reportedly aware of the incident.
The incident happens barely hours after three National Police Reservists (NPR) were abducted on Thursday night by suspected Al-Shabaab terrorists in Wajir and subsequently ferried across the border into Somalia.
Earlier this week, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) warned that at least forty militants had been spotted crossing over into Mandera County, where they are reported to be planning to execute a series of retaliatory attacks. Further reports also alleged the militants were hiding in Lafey area in the outskirts of Mandera town.
“Unconfirmed reports indicate that the militant group has given an ultimatum that they want weapons recovered from them in Dawaduba returned within the next 24hrs or they will vent their anger on the local community within Lafey sub-county,” reads the intelligence report.
The security threats come even as the Kenyan government announced the closure of Somali border in Lamu.
