Addressing media in Nakuru on Thursday, led by Midrift Human Rights Network CEO Joseph Omondi, programme manager Centre for Enhancing Democracy and Good Governance (CEDGG), Paul Masese Kemunche and John Kamande representing the youths, the human rights defenders said the county assembly has breached the law.

The activists said the move by the county assembly was orchestrated after the Salaries and Remuneration Commission SRC issued a circular indicating that house committees leadership will be entitled to allowance.

According to Mr.Omondi, they will move to court to court to challenge what they term is greediness by the male MCAs in Nakuru county.

“The move to have nominated MCAs locked out of the house committees is a breach of the law as they will not be able to air their concerns, unlike their elected counterparts. We are moving to court to challenge the same,” said Omondi.

While noting that the nominated MCAs represent the minority and marginalized groups as enshrined in the law, Omondi said their 'intimidation' in the county assembly of Nakuru is an indicator that the elected MCAs have no respect for the youths, women, and people living with disability.

Sentiments echoed by Masese Kemunche from CEDGG adding that the fight in the Nakuru county assembly between the male and female MCAs over committees’ leadership is simply because of the allowances allocated by the SRC.

Masese said the genesis of the row is purely over money.

“Actually what is happening at the county assembly of Nakuru is just men fighting women just because of allowances allocated by SRC which is a shame for such to happen. We are now calling on the women, youths and people living with disability in Nakuru to rise and defend their spaces. The media should also help make this a big agenda to be addressed,” said Masese.
