Peninah Muthoni Mbugua's contribution towards the growth and development of vernacular radio in Kenya is indisputable.
Since her old days at the State broadcaster, KBC, where she was working for the hourly Gikuyu Service to her lengthy stay at Kameme FM with a short stint at Inooro FM, Peninah, popularly known by her on-air name PM², has marveled many by her ability to evolve with radio and remain relevant for decades.
But as it is often said, that which has a beginning must have an end. PM² cannot remain on radio forever.
As we talk, all indications show that perhaps it is high time PM² considered hanging her boots.
And because facts do not lie, in a recent GeoPoll survey for the first quarter of 2018 on radio audience ratings, PM Squared's 'Humuka' show on Kameme FM was rated behind Inooro FM's 'CuaCua' show hosted by the Man Simo-Katta duo.
At no point during the four-hour-long show does 'Humuka' overtake 'CuaCua'.
Robert Greene in his widely read book '48 Laws of Power' notes: "Do not go past the mark you aimed for; in victory, learn when to stop..."
So, could PM² recent poor ratings on radio be as a result of her not recognising she has gone past the mark she perhaps aimed for? Well, it is only her who can tell.
In the meantime, the big question still lingers, will PM² stay put and wait to be pushed out disgracefully due to her poor ratings or she will cease the moment and retire with honour? Time will tell.
