The man waylaid a female student from Moi University School of Medicine and hacked her using an axe.

According to witnesses, the man monitored the girl as she left the varsity's premises and pounced at her as she approached the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital centre where she was reportedly having a practical paper.

Those who witnessed the brutal murder said the man, in his late twenties, hit the girl twice on the head and then cut her neck with a knife.

The two weapons appeared new.

He then tried to escape before he was cornered and given a dog's beating.

Police arrived and rescued him. He is now receiving treatment at the MTRH facility in critical condition.

The female student's body was taken to the facility's mortuary as well.

She was identified as Ivy Wangechi, a sixth year medical student.

Police said they are investigating when the man left Thika and the motive behind the heinous act.

Wangechi's friends described her as a cute and bubbly girl who looked forward to practising as a 'doctor without border'.
