Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren now wants the government to increase the milk buying prices for farmers.
Speaking to the press in Eldoret town on Wednesday, Tiren said the price being offered to farmers is a drop in the ocean.
“It is a shame that farmers sell milk for 24 shillings per liter to KCC and when you do away with transport it remains 20 shilling per litre, yet a consumer buys the same milk at 120 shillings per litre, seriously who is fooling who,” Tiren said.
“This country is now killing the consumer and the farmer because if the farmer is paid 24 shillings per litre why is the consumer charged 120 per litre it could be at least sh 50 to the consumer,” added Tiren.
He further said that it's sad that the government has decided to import milk from Uganda paying higher prices than the milk which is readily available in the country.
He said that farmers are suffering because Kenya has imported over 10,000 tonnes of milk.
Tiren wondered where Uganda will get the milk that will be able to feed the entire country, adding that this is just milk that has been bought by cartels taken to Uganda then re-imported back to the country.
