There must be growing discomfort in Deputy President William Ruto's 2022 political camp following NASA co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka's decision to support the Jubilee administration.
Kalonzo, on Saturday after a Wiper party meeting in Nairobi, approved President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga's handshake "for the sake of promoting unity" in the country besides his support for the Jubilee administration's Big Four agenda.
Kalonzo's decision to back Uhuru in his last term in office could be a huge blow to Ruto who is busy building alliances with like-minded leaders throughout the country.
After netting Ford Kenya Leader Moses Wetangula in his (Ruto) camp, NASA co-principals Kalonzo and Musalia Mudavadi may have been Ruto's next target because of the large command the two leaders have in their respective regions.
But now that Kalonzo is gone, Ruto is left with a few options- approach Mudavadi as well as other light-weight leaders across the country to jack-up his presidential bid in 2022.
There had been speculation after Raila's swearing in as the people's president at Uhuru Park on January 30th that Kalonzo, Mudavadi and Wetangula would join Ruto's camp as the race for 2022 picks momentum. But it never came to pass except for Wetangula.
Ruto has the support of a few MPs from opposition zones including Coast and Western. However, what these MPs lack is the authority that the NASA co-principals carry in swaying masses to support a particular presidential candidate in 2022.
