Prominent human rights activist Okiya Omtatah has been feted with a Lifetime Achievement award.

Omtatah was awarded by a team led by former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga. The awards ceremony was held by the National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Kenya and Working Group on Human Defenders.

During the awards ceremony held on Friday, Omtatah also received the  Popular Award.

The awards were hosted at the residence of Belgium ambassador to Kenya where Anastacia Nambo also emerged as a top winner.

Mambo who is based in Mombasa is known for her fight to protect the environment. She has been fighting for the environment for the last ten years.

She was instrumental in the closure of Metal Refinery based Uhuru Owino slums in Mombasa. 

According to Belgium ambassador to Kenya, Nicolas Nihon, the awards are aimed at recognizing outstanding human rights activists in the country.

Nihon added that Belgium acknowledges that human rights are the base of any democracy.
