Garissa Governor Ali Korane has once again become a person of interest in the August 19 shooting of former Garissa finance CEC Idriss Mukhtar.
This is after the police linked someone close to Governor Korane who is said to have purchased cars which were used in the shooting.
According to Assistant Inspector General of Police Charles Owino, two of the three cars repossessed by detectives had just changed ownership.
The new team of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) who are handling the case questioned someone close to the governor.
Speaking to reporters at Parklands Police Station, Mr Owino said two of the cars in police custody were bought in Nairobi while the third one was bought in Eldoret just days before the shooting happened.
Mr Owino said based on the new information, they are carrying out investigations to establish the real owners of the cars that were involved in the incident adding that they will arrest the suspects involved.
“I cannot answer whatever you have asked because I would be discussing too much of the evidence but we have that information. Based on the information that we have, a governor is a person of interest in this matter,” he said as quoted by standardmedia.co.ke.
“If the evidence leads us to whoever it is, including the governor, he will be charged. You have seen us charge officials from all levels of government before,” said the Assistant Inspector General of Police.
The former Garissa CEC was shot in the head and left for dead outside a hotel in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.
Mr Mukhtar was rushed to Nairobi Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition and he is still in ICU.
