The latter has rejected his appointment to chair the new ODPP implementation taskforce, which is an inspectorate arm of the office.

While rejecting the appointment, Chunga cited personal reasons, saying that he is currently engaged elsewhere and cannot perform in the suggested capacity.

"Many thanks for appointing me as the chairman of the task force. However, due to pressing commitments I have undertaken elsewhere, I regret to advise that I will not be able to undertake the appointment,” he said.

The former CJ was appointed alongside Rita Wambui Kuria as his deputy, with his decision meaning that the formation of the unit will be delayed for 30 more days.

Among the roles to be handled by the unit is to make recommendations on the establishment and operationalization of the Office of the Inspectorate Unit.

It will also be responsible for the formulation of guidelines for the ODPP's operations and submission of prosecution reports and recommendations across the country to the DPP.

The formation of the team came amid increasing cases bungled prosecution processes courtesy of corruption occasioned by corrupt prosecutors, investigators and the accused.

Chunga's appointment was already facing opposition courtesy of a petition filed in court by a group of lawyers who cited the TJRC report which suggested he should not hold any position.

This was in line with his illegal allocation of public land in Upperhill area in Kisumu and another in the same county.
