Many issues came into play during the visit, but here are the two major lessons learned during the tour.

1. Kisumu residents have embraced the handshake

On March 09, 2018, President Kenyatta and Odinga shocked their supporters when they decided to bury their political hatchet for the sake of the country’s peace and unity after last year’s much divisive presidential elections.

The two embraced each other in what came to be referred to as 'handshake'. Being an opposition stronghold, majority of Kisumu residents were left confused, with many of their questions concerning the handshake remaining an answered.

But now, Luo Nyanza residents are clearly aware that the handshake is about national unity and harmony. In Kisumu, residents seem to have embraced the truce owing to the number of people that came out to welcome the leaders in Ahero, Kondele and Mamboleo Show Ground.

2. Kenyans should prepare for a referendum

It is perhaps official; Kenyans should brace themselves for a constitutional referendum in the near future.

While in Kisumu, the Head of State said that as a country we must move away from ‘the winner takes it all’ in order to prevent clashes after each and every general election.

This is a pointer that at some stage, the Constitution will be amended to create more leadership positions to absorb those who lose in the race for State House.
