Deputy President William Ruto still remains the front runner in the 2022 presidential race, former Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale has said.
Khalwale states that there should be no cause for alarm following the recent meeting between opposition leader Raila Odinga and Senator Gideon Moi (Baringo).
Moi is one of the candidates who has expressed interest in vying for the presidency in 2022.
His entry in the 2022 State House race, pundits argue, complicates DP Ruto’s ambition to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, Khalwale maintains that the Raila-Moi meeting which could have had 2022 undertone does not in any way shakeup Rift Valley’s support for Ruto.
If anything, he says, it leaves the DP “as the front runner”.
The ex-senator who is an ardent supporter of the DP opines that Moi who doubles up as the KANU chairman has had an opportunity in the past to demonstrate his political clout but has failed.
“Gideon Moi has had an opportunity to demonstrate that he has some console of his community. He had that opportunity in 2013 when he was helping Mudavadi and he gave Mudavadi nothing. All the votes, Ruto took to Uhuru,” he told Hivisasa.
“The second opportunity is the by-election in Baringo. He could not even raise a candidate. It is clear that Gideon Moi is a sympathizer,” adds Khalwale.
Some political players have in the past stated that should Moi push through with his ambition for the presidency in 2022, it will be a race between dynasties against the “hustler”.
Ruto's handlers have also dismissed that Moi's entry will deny him a sizeable number of votes from his own backyard.
