During a function held at the Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete, the President announced the merger of the Kenya Police and the Administration Police into General Duty Police Unit and introduced a new uniform for the combined force.

He said the blue uniform was aimed at enhancing the visibility of the officers.

But Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei disapproved the move observing it was a copy of what police in China wear.

"The road to Shanghai is real, Viva Dragon," Cherargai posted on social media.

His Kericho counterpart Aaron Cheruiyot laughed at the uniforms, joking that they had no pockets.

"The marvellous thing about the new police uniform? NO POCKETS," he tweeted.

While announcing the changes, President Uhuru asked the police officers to be ready to serve Kenyans with utter dedication and urged them to approach their duty with bravery, honesty and commitment.

"The comprehensive changes we are ushering today are meant to deepen the transformation of the police, and, indeed, our overall national security.

These changes will improve the morale of policemen and women by improving their conditions of service," he said.

"They will clarify and simplify command and control to increase accountability and performance, and they will make our police more than equal to the threats to our Nation."
