The Kenyan team that traveled to Nigeria was by Tuesday evening still stranded at the Lagos International Airport, due to logistical challenges.
The team, alongside other African teams, was supposed to connect to Asaba from Lagos, but flights between the two areas became a big challenge.
Team Kenya was among the teams that was caught up in the mess with the athletes, officials and journalists forced to stay overnight in Lagos.
The Kenyan contingent, together with journalists spent the night at an airport hotel and was to take a chartered flight to Asaba, which is almost 600 kilometers away.
Some athletes from other African countries threatened to fly back to their respective countries if the situation could not be sorted.
The delay has affected the start of the games, which was initially meant to kick off today, Wednesday, at 9 am with the decathlon’s 100 meters race where Kenya is represented by policeman Gilbert Koech.
Kenya will then participate in one of the medal-hunting races, where Vincent Rono, Josephat Bett, and Kipsang Temoi will compete in the men’s 10,000 meters final.
Further reports indicate that roads leading to the stadium are in bad condition, further dampening the spirit of the competitions.
