Though most of them have been rather silent with their plans, a good number are already eyeing gubernatorial seats in the 2022 polls, as they seek to remain relevant after Uhuru's exit.

These include some who have been seen as technocrats, while a number who were fished from the political scene has also hinted at going back to their old ways.

As of now, those deemed to be eyeing county boss seats include Water CS Simon Chelugui who is said to be eyeing the Baringo seat, after his futile senatorial bid 2017.

However, asked if he is interested in any seat, Chelugui remained non-committal, saying that he would rather concentrate on his current job.

"As at now, my hands are tied as I seek to implement the president’s pledges by 2022. I will decide on the next course of action at an appropriate time,” he told the Standard.

His Sports counterpart Amina Mohammed is also likely to vie for the Kakamega seat.

Energy CS who is also the former Kericho Senator Charles Keter has been associated with the Kericho, alongside Mining CS John Munyes (Turkana) and Devolution CS Eugene Wamalwa (Trans Nzoia).

Interior CS Fred Matiangi has also been associated with the Kisii or Nyamira gubernatorial seat, with Trade CS Peter Munya and his Tourism counterpart Najib Balala expected to go for the Meru and Mombasa seats respectively.

Munya served a single term at the helm of Meru county before his 2017 ouster, while Balala's 2013 attempt to win the Mombasa seat, after years as the Mvita MP flopped.

Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri has openly declared interest in deputizing Deputy President William Ruto in the race to succeed President Kenyatta.
