It has emerged that new teachers in some schools are being mishandled by their seniors.
Some new teachers in the profession are complaining that they are being overworked in their schools.
A report by Nation indicates that new teachers are 'forced' to teach not less than 40 lessons in a week whereas their senior colleagues are only attending classes at most 10 times in a week.
One teacher revealed that new teachers are handled the same way form one student used to be dealt with in the past before new regulations were affected in schools.
Primary schools are said to be the most affected one with this unexpected 'bullying' as compared to secondary schools
"The treatment here reminds me of the days in school when 'monolisation' (bullying) of Form Ones was real. We are treated as outsiders and assigned to teach far too many subjects compared to our colleagues who hail from the host counties," said a teacher from a school in Kakamega County who asked for anonymity from Nation for fear of victimisation.
Another teacher from Trans Nzoia County echoed what the Kakamega colleague said, adding that some senior teachers offload their lessons for the week to them, plus conditioning them to keep it a secret within themselves
"The subjects are under their names on the timetable. Yours is to teach but you are not supposed to reveal that when the education officials visit schools," the teacher said.
However, the Kenya Primary school heads Association (Kepsha) chairman Nicholas Githemia said new teachers are yet to raise the same issue to them.
Nevertheless, he said that some teachers end up prioritizing on what subjects they should to assigned to teach, with most of them avoiding those with a lot of markings.
“Teachers in primary school are trained to teach all subjects and they must do so. However, we have some teachers that are very choosy and always want to dictate which subjects to teach,” said Mr Githemia.
The Kenya Ministry of Education only allows school head, his or her deputy and the senior masters, to have lesser lessons because they got other responsibilities as compared to the rest of the teachers.
