Speaking during Citizen TV's JKL Show, Sonko revealed that he used to smoke the outlawed substance during his tenure as Member of Parliament for Makadara.

The controversial county boss went further to claim that he used to smoke bhang in the company of Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, who then served as Embakasi Member of Parliament.

"When we were MPs we used to smoke bhang with Waititu in some toilet there. He used to hide bhang in his socks. Mimi niliwacha lakini bado yeye anavuta bangi na ni Gavana (I quit smoking but Waititu has not stopped despite being a governor)," said Sonko.

Reacting to the remarks which have caused a stir on social media, Raila Odinga Junior asked the Kiambu Governor to back the proposed bill on the legalisation of bhang in the country so that he can smoke 'without hiding' once it is passed.

"Gov Sonko just made some allegations about Waititu. I think Gov Waititu should now join the movement of legalising Marijuana for medicinal purposes, if it gets successful there will be no more hiding," Raila Junior tweeted.

Raila Junior was referring to the Marijuana Control Bill 2018 which seeks to decriminalise bhang in Kenya.

The controversial piece of legislation is being sponsored by Kibra Member of Parliament Ken Okoth.
