Chief Justice David Maraga has accused MPs of making the judiciary look like 'beggars' in budget making process, adding that the move impedes execution of judiciary's mandate.
At Nyandarua on Friday, Maraga insisted that the development money for judiciary directly benefits people at grassroot.
“Our desire is to have courts available within a distance of half hour to one hour distance from their homes. Devolution is one strong pillar in our constitution and having judicial services devolved is in line with the constitution,” said Justice Maraga.
He added: "It doesn't make sense when they make it appear as if we are begging. We are doing this for the sake of people."
Judiciary budget was drastically reduced to Sh14 billion in 2018/19 with the money for development sliced to Sh50 million
But recently, President Uhuru Kenyatta increased the amount during the passing of controversial Finance Bill in September.
In Nyamira, Borabu MP Ben Momanyi urged Maraga to use the recent adjustments to ensure court cases are heard and determined in time.
"It will be prudent if these cases are determined in time. Backlog must be dealt with even as we increase the funds," he said, a statement which was backed by MP Jerusha Momanyi.
