Embattled lawyer Assa Nyakundi who was charged with the murder of his son Bongonko Nyakundi has been arrested.
Nyakundi was arrested on Wednesday moments after leaving his lawyer John Khaminiwa’s office in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, Citizen Digital reports.
Nyakundi is said to have been arrested by detectives and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.
Details about why the lawyer has been arrested remain scanty.
Nyakundi's arrest comes hours after Justice Ngenye Macharia directed that the application filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to have the manslaughter charge against him dropped so that he can face murder charges be placed before Justice Luka Kimaru.
The arrest also comes after Kiambu High Court Judge Christine Meoli recused herself from hearing the case citing conflict of interest. She instead referred it to the Milimani Law Courts.
In her recusal, Judge Meoli noted that Nyakundi was once her classmate.
Nyakundi is accused of having shot his 29-year-old son on March 17, 2019, killing him on the spot.
The lawyer told detectives that he was trying to hostler his firearm while in the car when he accidentally shot his son.
He was arraigned in court and charged with manslaughter. However, the DPP is seeking to have the charges dropped and instead wants Nyakundi to be charged with murder.
