Throughout 2018, Kingi, a second term ODM governor, rarely attended functions convened by his party but would be seen in functions held by Deputy President William Ruto thus causing anxiety within the Orange party.

Before Tuesday's meeting, Kingi met Raila for the first time in as many months at Mombasa last Monday during the latter's 74th birthday with details of their meeting remaining scanty.

Raila announced meeting Kingi through a statement saying; "Governor Kingi called on me at Capitol Hill Square, we discussed issues of concern to the people of Kilifi County and the coastal region in general."

Besides Kingi's noncommittal attitude towards Odinga's party, the ODM boss is also facing a rebellion from Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa and her Msambweni counterpart Suleiman Dori.

Kingi also shared a brief after the meeting with the party leader.

"I was privileged to meet Rt Hon Raila Odinga. We discussed a range of issues among them unity and development in the country," he wrote on Twitter.

During 2017 polls, it is only in Kilifi County that ODM party managed to scoop all seats from the MCAs to the governorship. However, Odinga has often worked closely with Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho in his quest to control coast politics.
