Ainabkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut has advised farmers from the North Rift region not to sell their maize to National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
Speaking to the press in Eldoret town on Saturday, Chepkut said farmers should wait until the government reviews the maize prices from the current Sh2,300 to Sh3,600 per 90-kilogram bag.
The Jubilee allied MP termed the recently approved price of maize as too low.
“I call upon farmers from Uasin Gishu not to sell their maize to NCPB and instead wait for President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene for the maize prices to be increased,” said Chepkut who also called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to suspend the importation of subsidised fertilizer and use the money to buy maize from farmers at a better price.
He also appealed to legislators in maize growing regions in the North Rift to work together in harmony and fight for better prices for farmers instead of using the matter for political mileage.
The Cabinet on Thursday approved Sh2,300 as the price the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) will be buying maize from farmers this season.
A section of local leaders from maize growing areas in the North Rift, as well as farmers, have since rejected the price which is far lower than Sh3,200 NCPB was buying maize last season.
