The 11th summit for restructuring of the Union was Raila's first in his official capacity as High Representative for Infrastructural Development, a position he was appointed last month.

Mr Odinga's appointment is said to have been endorsed by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Tanzania President John Magufuli and South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa.

In the sidelines, Ramaphosa, business partner with Mr Odinga, was pictured with the two leaders and is credited for their unexpected handshake.

A couple of weeks ago, Raila bowed out of bitter succession debate, insisting that he's keen on his new Job in Addis Ababa.

"I am not interested in 2022. I am fully focused in delivering on my new mandate as AU special envoy," he said through his spokesman Dennis Onyango.
