A day after his win, Ugenya MP-elect David Ochieng continues to be associated with Deputy President William Ruto, though it is still not clear if the two are as close as is being said.

Even so, Ruto will obviously be seeking to use Ochieng to realize his 2022 presidential bid.

This is with a consideration that the MP hails from Siaya county, the home county of his main critic and possible competitor in the race, ODM leader Raila Odinga.

With most area politicians rigidly allied to Raila, the DP will be seeking the help of Ochieng who now seems like a black sheep and an easy target to at least deliver a small portion of the Siaya vote to the DP's basket.

He will also be seeking to turn him into a weapon against Raila, in a bid to give the image that even the former Premier's bedrock is against him, a good political weapon.

However, these attempts will most likely backfire and be rejected by Ochieng if made.

This is because Ochieng is a youthful politician who obviously has bigger plans in the future.

He is well aware that he cannot realize that by being alone and standing isolated by his counterparts, which is set to follow since most area leaders are pro-Raila.

His case is different from that of Migori Governor Okoth Obado who has remained stubborn, being well aware that he has reached the top, being on his second and last term.

Also, the voters elected Ochieng to go and serve them and not make political pacts in an attempt to broker their votes.

He is well aware that such attempts might erode the confidence the people have in him, resulting in rejection come 2022.

Thirdly, despite all the hype and talk around the issue, Ochieng remains just an MP who cannot match Raila's power in the region, as far as a major election is concerned. Therefore, he cannot tilt Siaya's decision in the presidential race and is actually likely to troop back to ODM in the near future, as was the case with Obado and Muhoroni MP James Koyoo.

Both were elected on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 2013, after losing the ODM support, and reunited with ODM in the run-up to the 2017 polls, and proceeded to win.

If he sides with the DP, he will be branded a man out to sabotage the possible presidency of a son of the land, which is never forgiven in the area.

One of the people who attempted that and landed in the political pit is Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju, whose support for retired President Mwai Kibaki in 2007 was his end.

Though he might have won the seat, Ochieng will not take any move he is aware might land him in trouble, aligning himself with Ruto in this contest.
