With the cold war between DP Ruto and opposition chief Raila Odinga escalating every day, the war of words between the two camps is arguably taking a new direction.

Siaya Senator James Orengo who doubles up as a long-time confidant of Raila made headlines recently when he pointed out that he has a plan to impeach DP Ruto using the legislative procedure.

Despite DP Ruto’s camp quickly reacting to that politically delicate statement, ODM has since distanced itself from the remarks.

But my point of contest here is the manner in which the Luo lawmakers have openly distanced themselves from Orengo’s statement.

The reason why the lawmakers have distanced themselves from the political circus is because of the fear of going against Raila.

A number of politicians who defied Raila in the region had their political lives cut short.

For example, Rafael Tuju lost his Rarieda seat due to an alleged cold war with Raila.

Even the likes of Jakoyo Midiwo and Nicholas Gumbo are currently not holding elective positions because they allegedly refused to listen to Raila.

Thus, it is highly unlikely for any Nyanza MP to support comments such as those made by the fearless Siaya Senator.

A lot of the MPs from Nyanza want to remain relevant on the ground by being loyal to their leader.

Borrowing from what befell Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa, the fear of contradicting Raila is well spelt out.

The silence and distancing of Nyanza MPs from Orengo's statements are, by and large, a cushion from possible expulsion from ODM.

Besides, the relationship between Raila and President Uhuru Kenyatta is intact, therefore, many politicians from the lake region are measuring their statements.

Orengo could end up alone in this journey to impeach DP William Ruto.
