Kenya Revenue Authority has declared a crackdown on landlords who have not complied with their tax obligations.
In a notice seen by The Star, KRA has said that it will not spare any tax defaulters as it seeks to increase the collection. Francis Muthaura, the KRA board chairman has said that the days of the defaulters are numbered.
He reiterated the need of the property owners to pay taxes on time for the sake of economic empowerment.
"Section 6A of the Income Tax Act CAP 470 requires any residential person receiving residential rental income amounting to Sh12,000 and above per month not exceeding Sh10 million per year to register for the monthly rental income -MRI," the notice reads.
On Tuesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta urged the Kenya Revenue Authority to ensure there is increased tax collection. He asked the authority to put in place measures to ensure there is no case of tax evasion.
He said that his government needs taxes to finance different activities in government. He also said that tax-compliant Kenyans pay their taxes to facilitate the smooth operation of the government.
The head of state also commended Kenyans who have been paying their taxes since he entered into power. He also promised to support other arms of the government.
