Deputy President William Ruto promised the Kenya male National football team a token of Sh50 million should they end the long wait to participate in the African Cup of Nation.
The National team did their part by beating Ethiopia 3-0 at the Kasarani stadium that effectively ensured they will participate in this year's African Cup of Nations in Egypt starting 21st June.
Almost four months down the line the promise had not been fulfilled with the politics on whether DP Ruto was making the pledge as an individual or as a government taking the centre stage.
However, the newly appointed Sports Cabinet Amina Mohammed, speaking at the ministry's headquarters on Friday where she issued a cheque of Sh250 million to organisers of the Kenya Open Golf tournament as sponsorship from government, explained how the government will honour its pledge to the national team.
The CS said the government had already approved the Sh244 million budget submitted by the Football Kenya Federation to cater for the preparation of the tournament in Egypt.
She said the amount was inclusive of the 50 million promise by DP Ruto as reported by the Nation.
Sports and Social Development Fund chairman Jackson Tuwei, speaking in the same function confirmed the pledge will be given as part of the Sh244 million.
“We have also discussed the issue of the Sh50 million and resolved to give the Stars that amount as part of the Sh244 million budget,” Tuwei said.
