The 2022 succession politics is on top gear as politicians across the divide strategize for top seats in the coming general election.
In Machakos County, several top politicians are said to be eyeing and lobbying to succeed Governor Alfred Mutua, who is serving his second and final term in office.
The Maendeleo Chap Chap Governor was first elected in 2013 general election on Wiper ticket. Mutua later fell-out with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and formed his Maendeleo Chap Chap Party. In the 2017 general election, Mutua won under his party.
As the 2022 general election quickly approaches, governor Mutua is yet to hint on his possible successor. However, if the recent happenings are anything to go by, then Mutua could be grooming Machakos Senator Boniface Kabaka for the gubernatorial seat in 2022.
In a meeting with the Senate Committee on Delegated Legislation at his (Mutua) office on Thursday last week, Governor Mutua openly heaped praise on Senator Kabaka, saying he is he among the few senators who are committed to their work.
The Machakos Governor said the country needs committed senators to ensure devolution works. Mutua said he enjoys a cordial working relationship with the Senator.
Kabaka is likely to be among top politicians to succeed Mutua in 2022.
Other politicians eyeing Mutua’s seat in 2022 is former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti. Ndeti has two times unsuccessfully contested for the Machakos gubernatorial seat.
Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka, Kathiani MP Robert Mbui, Mavoko Patrick Makau and Machakos legislator Victor Munyaka are also said to be eyeing the Machakos top seat in the forthcoming 2022 general election.
