A meeting by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House on Saturday reached a decision that several government ministers be grilled over claims they are laying plans to have Deputy President William Ruto assassinated.
The Standard on Tuesday reported that Uhuru summoned Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai, Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti and National Intelligence Service Director General Philip Kameru after he received concerns from his deputy.
Ruto reportedly lamented to the President that a group of Mt Kenyatta government figures were holding night meetings planning how he will be eliminated ahead of 2022.
After the Saturday meeting, Uhuru ordered that anyone mentioned in the serious allegations records statements immediately.
That is what led to ministers Peter Munya (Trade), Joseph Mucheru (ICT), James Macharia (Transport) and Sicily Kariuki (Health) report to DCI headquarters for grilling.
After hours of grilling, Munya said they had agreed not to record statements first.
"We have not been able to record any statement because the standard procedure is that if somebody makes an allegation of that nature, that person is required by law to record a statement. The DP has not recorded any statement,” said Munya.
He added: “We came to a conclusion and agreement with them that we can’t record any statement at this stage until the complainant makes a substantive complaint in writing against which then we can be able to respond."
Reports of the claims emerged on Monday thrusting the country into political spin as social media users took position on the matter.
DCI George Kinoti on Monday said they had received a call from the DP on the matter.
"Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti has now confirmed that Deputy President William Ruto indeed called him saying his life was in danger," Citizen.co.ke reported.
