The Luo music industry is switching from the initial Benga style, to the more danceable and attractive Ohangla genre which is loved by the old and young alike.
Here are some of the musicians who have been directly affected by the shift, some of whose music is no longer played or listened to by the masses.
1. Ajoji Dume
He was the biggest thing in Luo Nyanza some ten years back when he burst into the airwaves with his 'Nyar Boss Mora' hit song.
Unfortunately, he fell back as quickly as he rose, and has since stopped releasing music apparently, with the one time big hit going under as well.
2. Prince July
He was one of the most popular musicians in the 80s and 90s and worked together with the likes of Okatch Biggy, back in the days of bands and Benga Music groups.
His death marked the death of his music as well, and has since been further affected by the rise of Ohangla music, with the new generation switching away from the ancient music.
The 'Nancy Nyar Ugunja' hitmaker was the husband of Luo music queen Princess July.
3. James Adwera
He was also an associate of Okatch who died in 1998 and with him (Adwera) too following in December 2002.
Due to his bulky appearance, he was popularly referred to as 'Ng'ama iye ng'ogo' (the fat man) and was among the musicians who graced Jaramogi's funeral service in 1996.
Consequently, some of these musicians remain unknown to most of today's revellers and music lovers, since their songs no longer have a place in DJ playlists and radio and televisions.
